We took Alfie The Elf on a community tour across Kirklees!

Find out what happened on Alfie The Elf's community tour from our Creative Associate, Olivia Race

Throughout December we took one of our Christmas shows, Alfie the Elf's Christmas Rescue, on tour to venues across Kirklees. We visited schools and libraries generally spreading festive joy and having a brilliant time.

We performed for a school group and a public audience in each of the libraries we visited. We visited Cleckheaton Library, Diamond Wood Community Academy, Birstall Library, Kirkheaton Primary School, Kirkheaton Library, Batley Library, Ravensthorpe's Greenwood Centre and Slaithwaite Library.

We wanted to explore taking some of the work we make at the Lawrence Batley Theatre out into the community, and with the support of Kirklees Libraries we were able to make this tour a resounding success.

Spoiler alert! During the show Alfie does a series of incredibly naughty things, landing himself a place on Father Christmas' naughty list. There's a happy ending, don't worry, and the children and adults were quick to point out all the naughty things Alfie was doing, and ultimately helped him rectify his wrongs in order to get rescued and return home to the North Pole.

The school groups which visited Alfie in the libraries had a wonderful afternoon out as they drew near the end of term, with lots of them telling me they'd learnt the importance of "being nice" and "telling the truth" from Alfie. Thanks to funding from the wonderful Garfield Weston Foundation we were able to offer the public performances at very little, to no cost; at an expensive time of year to offer a joyful Christmas show to local communities felt truly brilliant.

There's something really magical about a group of children singing Jingle Bells as loud as they can and hysterically laughing at an Elf throwing tinsel at a Christmas tree. It really is the most wonderful time of the year!
