Direct from a sell-out run at Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre our spring season opens with A Midsummer Nights Dream. This critically acclaimed take on a Shakespeare classic performed by an all-female cast is set on a wild hen night where anything and everything is possible. It's Shakespeare like you've never seen before - think Love Island meets The Real Housewives of Cheshire!
Next up is Jesus, Jane, Mother & Me, a new play by award-winning writer Philip Stokes. A co-production between ourselves and Ketchup Productions, this new show tells the story of a complex relationship between a son and mother and their mutual obsession with a certain Wakefield born diva! Jesus, Jane, Mother & Me is a breathtaking drama that will have you laughing and crying in equal measures.
A host of touring productions will visit the theatre including Levantes Dance Theatre’s THE BAND, James Gaddas (Bad Girls, Coronation Street) in a one man version of Dracula, Balletboyz’s latest show Deluxe and A Tribute to the Rat Pack by Northern Swing Orchestra.
We have some cutting-edge theatre this season including the prodigious Black Is The Color Of My Voice inspired by the life of the successful jazz singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone, Forgiveness, the new show by celebrated theatre maker Jonny Donahoe and the ridiculously hilarious production how to live a jellicle life: life lessons from the 2019 hit movie musical cats.
We've got loads of fun for the family too. Some of the absolute highlights this season include Dragons and Mythical Beasts, which features phenomenally huge puppets that are sure to leave you and your little ones awestruck, Zog and the Flying Doctors based on the story by trusted children’s author Julia Donaldson and at February half term be spellbound by the crazy circus thrills of the High Jinx Magic, Illusion & Circus Show.
Those looking for a good laugh can enjoy a wealth of comedy performances which include Jason Byrne’s Audience Precipitation, Perrier Award nominated Reginald D. Hunter’s new show Bombe Shuffleur, and a tribute to comedy geniuses Morecombe and Wise in Ian Ashpitel & Jonty Stephens as Eric & Ern.
Our Chief Executive & Artistic Director Henry Filloux-Bennett said; “I can’t tell you how incredible it has been over the last few months as we’ve been able to have audiences back in the theatre. This spring we are so excited to share another fabulous season of live entertainment with you. With our top notch shows, you are sure to enjoy your time at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.”
