Interview with our resident Drag Queen, MissD
Get to know Chris behind the wonderful drag personalityChris is one of the staff members here at Lawrence Batley Theatre. On a usual working day Chris has a dual role at the theatre, working as the regular maintenance technician doing day to day repairs, overseeing refurbishment projects and liaising with contractors.
He is also a lighting designer and works on all in house productions. He is currently in the planning stages with Jack and the Beanstalk which opens in December.
However, Chis has a wonderful drag personality known as MissD who has performed throughout Summer in the Courtyard at Lawrence Batley Theatre. We asked Chris about MissD, how long she has been performing, and what we can expect from her in the future.
- Can you tell us a little bit about MissD?
Missdameana [shortened to MissD] appeared first in late 90’s at the Greyhound Hotel in Huddersfield as resident Drag DJ she performed there sometimes 5 times a week as DJ and Cabaret through until 2008. She was also host at Huddersfield’s Pink Picnic in 2004 and 2005. She has always been known for her sequin gowns [all custom made in Bangkok] high platform heels and outrageous wigs!
- How long have you been performing as Miss D?
Since about 1996
- Can you tell us a bit about the process of getting ready for a MissD performance?
First is choosing the gowns, wig and shoes and then the whole makeup transformation takes about 50 minutes. At least 2 pairs of dance tights and maybe tan fishnets all help to create the legs that ladies die for! There is a lot of “scaffolding” under what the audience see - it’s not very pretty or attractive.
- What can audiences expect from a MissD performance?
Fun! I try to have a 2 way relationship with my audience - I love to sing a variety of songs and on nights when I have my special guests with me Zoe Roebuck and Dom Moccia, we have a mix of songs to suit everybody. There is always adult humour but mainly innuendo so children are usually safe!
- What’s next for Miss D?
MissD is taking a rest, but her sister will be appearing at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Dick Whittington in January 2022.
You can see MissD perform on Friday 26th August in our last weekend of Summer in the Courtyard.
